Chapter 10

Inside once more, Micky handed Shay off to a pink fairy who guided her toward Sven’s second-floor office. She thought about ditching the girl, just snapping her fingers to freeze the waitress and making a run for it, but something in the bouncer’s gaze warned that resistance would be futile. Knowing Sven, he had every inch of this place covered by security cameras and spells. So Shay dropped her disguise and did as she was directed, determined to get this over with and get back to Jamie as fast as possible.

Gods knew nothing good ever happened when they were apart.

It bothered her, not knowing what she was walking into. Sven wasn’t the kind of guy anyone wanted to tangle with, not with roots as deep as his in the mob. He’d been a grunt once, a young goon of Mauri’s good at breaking knees and collecting dues. But he was smarter than most, and Mauri had seen potential.

Mauri was good at that—seeing people’s potential. A little too good, unfortunately, and likely to couple his powers of compulsion with that vision to turn supes away from the path they were on.

Shay found herself trying to picture what her life might have become if she hadn’t gotten caught up in his web of lies back in the day. One where she didn’t have to hide from mob, or walk around convinced that even the good guys weren’t all that good. A life where she could just be herself, unafraid of the people closest to her trying to use her powers as some secret weapon.

After discovering Mauri’s black heart, and having to escape from Divinity’s capture to avoid enlistment in their age-old fight against “the bad guys”, she’d tried to build that kind of life. On the run, she spent several lifetimes alone, hiding from everyone and hoping any trail she’d left behind would grow cold. Over time she’d found Blink, the two of them forming a sister-like bond of acceptance and camaraderie. But even now, Shay couldn’t seem to step out from under the black cloud that forever loomed overhead. No matter where they moved to or how well they covered their tracks, eventually their hideouts were discovered, the mob lurking in the shadows outside, waiting for them to make one false move.

And where had all that ducking for cover gotten her? Pinballing across Pennsylvania in a mad dash to rescue her sister. With a human, of all things. A guy who had nothing more to worry about than his job, an apartment, and some sickeningly sweet-sounding girlfriend. Shay would have almost been jealous of his ridiculously simple existence if the mob hadn’t managed to get to him, too.

Was no one safe anymore?

“Haven’t seen you around much lately, Shay,” said the waitress. “Work keeping ya busy?”

She eyed the back of Pinky’s head, forcing herself back to the here and now. “Uh, yeah. Way busy.”

“Boy, do I get that. After Sven started the dragon fights, we’ve been getting slammed.”

“Dragon…fights?”

Pinky grinned over her shoulder.
